I've always heard that practice makes perfect so I figured the best way to get better with my loader was to dig me a little hole. I got a lot of practice. When finished it is 80 feet long 8' wide and 6' deep in middle. Was digging down to drain culvert that had gotten buried over the years. Found it!

How old are you to know a culvert was buried down there in the 1800's? That sucker was deep.

Been living here since the 70's. Back then there was a mineral spirits plant there. Now it's part of my horse pastures. The culvert is at the bottom of two valleys that already route the water to the trench I dug. I was told the culvert was down there somewhere by someone that worked at the plant when it was operating. The water was draining to the culvert through the ground. Just had to find the end of it,just didn't know it was that deep.Just kept digging until I found it.

What does the other end of the culvert look like? Is it covered like the end we are seeing?

I'm not sure where Mulga is but if you get the frog strangling rains like we get some time, you're going to need a couple loads of RipRap to keep that trench from eroding/washing and filling the culvert up with dirt.

Other end of culvert is open in a valley across road. Mulga is 10 miles NW of Birmingham. Going to have to work on it some more to prevent washing.

What about pouring a catch-basin piped to the culvert and backfilling to the previous grade?

I can't contribute anything to the culvert solutions, but you are going to fence that nice little horse away from the area until it is done? I do know that horses do the darndest things including falling in holes etc.

Actually I have put a piece of fencing over the culvert to keep limbs etc. out of it and surrounded it with electric fence to keep them out of it. but the culvert goes back into the ground horizontally so not much worry of falling in it. I know horses will do their best to find a way to hurt themselves.
