G1900S problem - spinning drive wheel

Hi,

I just bought a pretty old G1900S. Tried my first cut on my rough patch of uneven grassland, with lots of slopes. The grass was pretty dry, but ground very soft and damp in patches.

I had a real problem because every time I reached a slight slope, one of the drive wheels would spin, and the machine came to a stop. I had to raise the cutting deck to have any chance of moving, and usually reverse down the slope.

It's always the same wheel that spins - the right drive wheel. Sometimes it spins even when I'm on the level, and sometimes I get completely stuck on level ground and can't go back or forward even with the deck up.

All the power seems to be going to one wheel. Do I have a problem with the differential? If so how could I fix it?

You should have a diff lock lever you can step on to lock both tires together. But no you tractor sounds like it is working properly. Welcome to the wonderful world of 2wd. That is the reason I just traded up to a kubota 4wd.

What kind of shape are the tires in? Have you checked the pressure in the tires? Could be overfilled and unable to make good contact with the ground. Just a thought.

Try this as well, put the tractor on level pavement in neutral with engine off. How hard is it to push it. I am thinking its one of 3 things:

o you have a wheel bearing issue in one of the front tires making it hard to roll
o you have a brake issue on the rear tire that isn't spinning making it hard to roll
o its not hard to roll and you have a differential issue.

You can also jack up one wheel at a time and see that they all spin freely.

Oh yeah, and make sure that when your deck is down there isn't a little piece of something dragging in the dirt. (Been there on a Crappsman, that I no longer own).

Adding some weight to the rear or some ballast to the rear tires makes a big difference on the smaller garden tractors, Also make sure the deck anti scalp wheels are set right and that the deck is not hanging too low, You could also switch the rear tires to a more agressive tread pattern but you need to be careful not to tear up your lawn.

Thanks for the helpful responses. I checked the tyres, but they seem to be OK. I'll check out some of the other ideas and when I find the problem I'll post the result here.

I have a G1900 and i had a 60 inch deck from day 1 when i bought it new. There is some wet area on my property where i loose traction because of the wide mower deck. I had the rear tires filled with beat juice (that added 75 pounds of weight per wheel). My problem was over. Later i added wheel weights and now i never spinn a wheel. Dont use cloride that will rot out the valve stem and maby the rim. I know this reply maby a little late maby not. I use turf tires
