I have noticed when removing my fuel cap on my L3400 I get a vacuum sound. When I take the cap off the rubber insert also stays on the fuel tank opening. Is it not venting properly? I cleaned the cap and reinstalled it, but it still seems to be doing the same thing. Tractor seems to run OK. Do I have a problem?

So does anyone else have a vacuum occurring/releasing when they loosen their fuel cap? Mine is very noticeable.

I thought I've heard of a similar problem on here before. Try and do a search in the post's and see if you can find a related problem. I know I've heard it before I just cant remember what the outcome was.

I have a L 3400 and it has happened to me when I have worked when it is hot outside and the next AM.when I fuel up it is cooler out side. Does not happen all the time and .I cleaned the cap and all seems well.

Sounds like a cap not venting. If cleaning it does not fix the problem either drill a small hole in the cap or buy a new one. You should not get any vacuum or pressure in the tank.

I have found some info on the cap and it appears I am missing a white plastic piece inside the cap. Anyone know if you can just buy this piece or the entire cap has to be replaced? Anyone know the cost for the missing piece or a new cap?

Not having a dealer down here, I buy my stuff from Messicks, online. I'm not sure how much this site has interest in selling parts, but if they do, you might try right here!

I don't think you could expect to purchase cap "parts" realistically speaking.....

Stopped by my local dealer and purchased the cap they said would fit. It doesn't. I thought the cap they gave me was a little small and commented on it, but they said it was correct. I will be getting the serial number on my tractor and taking it back to get the correct cap. For now I am letting the cap stay a little loose. Nothing they had looked exactly like mine.

By the way, you can buy cap parts also. One part was $12 that they pulled out, so I opted to buy the whole thing for about $6 more, unfortunately it is wrong.

Well, I'll be darned!

If I was wrong on that one, sending your accurate model information to Messicks will result in the correct part, pieces or complete assembly.

If your local dealer can't match a plastic fuel tank cap to an L3400, don't let him mess with anything more serious than tire pressure.
