Hi,

I'm new to the forum so if this question has been asked and answered then please just point me in that direction.

I have a B2710 that I bought new 14 years ago. Recently the fuel tank cap cracked. I ordered a new one from the dealership where I purchased the tractor. They ordered and sold me a 6A100-54920 fuel cap for $13.66. It's too small. They say that's because the fuel tank swelled up and is too big for the original cap and the one I now need is $44. and change. I've never heard of this. Owned a landscaping business for years and never had a fuel tank swell.

Is this normal? If it is, it seems like a defect and it kind of ticks me off that the cap I need to buy because of a defect is more than triple the cost of original equipment. Can anyone advise if this is normal and if the price for the replacement cap is fair?

Thanks.

I call BS  I'm thinking the dealer dropped the ball and sold you the wrong one. It seems that if the tank swelled, they wouldn't be able to find a cap to fit it.

I'll double down on what Daren said - horse hockey.......the tank swelled, and what little blue pills has it seen????

I would tell them to take the old cap back and, well, .....you read my thoughts!;)

Well thanks, guys. It did seem strange that they would automatically know which one to order now. Like it would swell an exact amount. Anyhow, I'll try calling another dealer or go online to find one. The really weird part was the price differential. One cap is $13. and the other one is $44. Oh well. I really appreciate the feedback and nice to learn about this forum. I've always got questions and now I know where to go!

I would go back to the same dealer and tell them I did some research and found this, "Item # 6A100-54910" replaces the original cap. Can you confirm this information. (This will force them to learn something and to get in their books) Might even help someone else in the future.

When they discover the information is correct, have them order it for you and return the original one that doesn't fit. There is no way I would pay for two caps with one not fitting, unless postage or gas was greater then the difference.

Thanks for posting, Sean. I learn something new (and sometimes weird) everyday around here.

The expensive replacement cap may be a supply and demand thing. The factory cap is made in large quantities as it is also used in the manufacturing process. The off-standard replacement cap probably has small quantity production which drives up cost. I would see that all the time in government procurement when the military tried to buy parts for equipment built in the 50s and 60s. To compound the problem, the original manufacturers were no longer in business and the parts would have to be reversed-engineered.

Just replaced my fuel cap about a month ago. I would have called HORSE HOCKEY:eek: on the new one not fitting thinking your tank was made of metal but I now see that it is plastic. I have seen the same thing happen to my brothers plastic JD tank.

What?? You want a cap that actually fits?? Well that'll cost extra.
The fact that tank caused original cap to crack, and now (by no fault of the owner) the new proper cap is $44.

I would call this manufacturer's defect.
Its like being held hostage....

The price in Wolfman's post is $21.xx
So maybe you can get it a little cheaper at Messick's or Coleman's now that you know the part number.

So I'm confused. I also need a fuel cap but mine is cracked around the top as if age and being tightened down caused the crack, not so much tank swelling, which would be diameter wise I assume, based on what I'm reading here.

This is on a 1979 B7100 with a plastic tank. Which cap do I need?

Part # 6A100-54920 CAP FUEL $10.51 (original size?)
Part # 6A100-54910 CAP, FUEL ASSY $21.73 (1/16" over sized?)

I suppose I could order both and pay for return shipping on the one that does not fit.

Thanks

I have a B2710 and this happened to me. Sent the wife to get a new cap which she gladly did and it certainly did not fit. That was around 5 p.m. and getting cool. My patience at that time was getting hot so I put some saran wrap over the inlet and put the old cap on. The next day high temp was around 85 F. and I tried again. It was a tough battle but it went on. So far the cap has not split again and amazingly it now goes on and comes off normally.

Just throwing this out there as it may go on in the warmer weather.
