Finding an appropriate sized tractor (hp) with a cab that's big enough.

Only thing he can do is go sit in various models and see. 280 is pretty hefty and he's tall. I am 6' 1" and skinny and fit with plenty of extra room on my L4701. I haven't tried any cabs so cannot say how I'd do. But climbing aboard different models and maybe even driving them around the dealer's yard will by the only way to really tell. Is he totally set on a cab? The 4701 is about 47 Hp, 4 cylinder.
You're absolutely right, he needs to try a bunch of models, but it's really leg room that's the issue, not width or height. If you've never sat in or operated a tractor with a bigger cab you won't know the difference in comfort that they offer. We can get used to many things in life, but we're comparative creatures and it's only through comparison that we learn that there are better options.

As for cab vs. open station, he's 73 and wants to use the tractor all year round in comfort so yes, it's a cab for him. I'm pushing him in that direction too based on my experience with two open station tractors and two cabbed tractors. I'd never buy another open station other than an old "project" tractor and the same goes for a mini excavator when it's time to buy one of those. I'm not even considering an open station mini for a number of reasons.

Speaking of hp, he doesn't need a 40hp+ model, but it might be the only way to get a comfortable sized cab. I really think that the MX4900HSTC would be a good choice for him assuming that the cab is the same size as my MX6000HSTC. I'll check with the local dealer (who moved recently 😏) and see if they have any MX4900HSTC models on the lot.

After sitting in that L4060 cab last Monday, there's no question that it's significantly smaller than the MX cab. I've sat in an L6060 cabbed model but that was four or more years ago and I don't remember thinking anything other than nice tractor. The L4060 and L4760 are smaller than the L5060, L5460 and L6060 models, so it stands to reason that the cabs are bigger in the 50+ hp variants. It would be good if my friend could head over this way and spend some time in my MX to give him a better idea of what it's like to use a tractor of this size. That won't happen until the spring though.
I would of thought the cabs would be the same on all of the L's. I'm 5'11" and 250 lbs and find the 5460 comfortable.

No, I don't think they are. The L5060, L5460, L6060, MX4900, MX5400 and MX6000 have the same or similar sized cabs based on overall lengths of around 126 in., but the L4060 and L4760 are shorter tractors with shorter overall lengths and have smaller cabs, at least based on the L4060 I sat in this past Monday. It felt WAY smaller than the MX6000 cab.

That's definitely interesting. I considered a 4760 but never sat in one.
