I was visiting a good friend and his mother this past weekend over in Kettle Falls, WA. He's 73 and his mother is 97 and still going strong. Turns out it was a working visit and I spent Monday shoveling gravel out of his Ford Super Duty, crawling around under his truck to drain the water separator (it had no water) and looking for the source of a small coolant leak. Turns out that he's really good at giving directions unless it's the location of the water separator!
After I had completed my chores we headed to Colville to look at tractors. He's been wanting a tractor ever since moving back home from Hawaii almost four years ago, so we stopped by the nearest Kubota dealer in town. He's on 6 acres and could really use a tractor. He has a lot of downed trees and I mean a lot. He needs to move snow, has some tilling to do each year for his mum, he needs to mix up the compost pile and spread it around, cut grass, spread gravel, etc. Something in the 25hp to 40hp range would be perfect for him but he could really use a cab. The problem is that he's 6ft 3in and simply doesn't fit in the cabs that come on 40hp and smaller tractors. Heck, I got in the cab of the L4060 shown below and there's no leg room in that thing. The width is ok (a bit tight), the height is excellent, but the lack of leg room is ridiculous. I'm 6 ft and have no problem getting in and out of my MX or M, but there's no way I'd buy an L4060 given the size of the cab. I don't think I've ever sat in a Kubota cab smaller than an MX5400/L6060 and was really surprised by how small the L4060 cab felt.
So now I don't know what the best solution is for him. Perhaps and open station is the only realistic option, but is the leg room any better? An MX5400 or L5460 (or bigger) have good cabs that most will fit in and be able to get in/out of fairly easily, but that's too much tractor for his needs. He's on a fixed income so not looking to spend $50k to $60k on a tractor that he's going to use 100 hours or less a year.
