I was visiting a good friend and his mother this past weekend over in Kettle Falls, WA. He's 73 and his mother is 97 and still going strong. Turns out it was a working visit and I spent Monday shoveling gravel out of his Ford Super Duty, crawling around under his truck to drain the water separator (it had no water) and looking for the source of a small coolant leak. Turns out that he's really good at giving directions unless it's the location of the water separator! 😂

After I had completed my chores we headed to Colville to look at tractors. He's been wanting a tractor ever since moving back home from Hawaii almost four years ago, so we stopped by the nearest Kubota dealer in town. He's on 6 acres and could really use a tractor. He has a lot of downed trees and I mean a lot. He needs to move snow, has some tilling to do each year for his mum, he needs to mix up the compost pile and spread it around, cut grass, spread gravel, etc. Something in the 25hp to 40hp range would be perfect for him but he could really use a cab. The problem is that he's 6ft 3in and simply doesn't fit in the cabs that come on 40hp and smaller tractors. Heck, I got in the cab of the L4060 shown below and there's no leg room in that thing. The width is ok (a bit tight), the height is excellent, but the lack of leg room is ridiculous. I'm 6 ft and have no problem getting in and out of my MX or M, but there's no way I'd buy an L4060 given the size of the cab. I don't think I've ever sat in a Kubota cab smaller than an MX5400/L6060 and was really surprised by how small the L4060 cab felt.

So now I don't know what the best solution is for him. Perhaps and open station is the only realistic option, but is the leg room any better? An MX5400 or L5460 (or bigger) have good cabs that most will fit in and be able to get in/out of fairly easily, but that's too much tractor for his needs. He's on a fixed income so not looking to spend $50k to $60k on a tractor that he's going to use 100 hours or less a year.

Might have to look at other brands to see how the cabs are.
I don't think the problem is unique to Kubota but I did suggest that he stop by the TYM dealer in Colville and the Kioti dealer in Chewela and see if he fits in any cabs on 40hp and lower tractors.

I think the Lamborghini R8 has a fairly spaceous cab:
Yeah, and I'll start calling him Jeremy! 😂

He got up in the M4-071 cab and was way more comfortable, but he found it to be a long way up and down, not to mention that the tractor would be unsuitable for his place. The instructor/buddy seat didn't help though. I don't have one in my M6060 and after experiencing how much it gets in the way I don't want one.

I'm 6ft 4in and I am very comfortable in my LX4020 cab with adequate leg room and a comfortable seat.
Everyone's idea of "adequate" is different, and as mobility and flexibility deteriorate, what once might have been adequate is now unacceptable or even dangerous. We see this all the time with members adding steps to their tractors to help getting on/off. I'm years away from needing that, but I understand that it's essential for others.

You can always throw out this extra seat, I'd imagine.

Or possibly higher the seat with spacers if adjustment range is not sufficient. Just an idea...

My L4240HSTC fits me just fine. I'm 6'-3" and 270#. My version came with a comfortable cloth seat. Note that I DID adjust the typical Kubota forward tilt out of it*. I'm not sure it's slid all the way back and there's plenty of legroom. In recent years Kubota has been introducing their "X" variations and confusing me on just how big / small different models have become. It is the most nimble and user-friendly tractor I've owned.

* I replaced the front two seat mounting bolts with longer bolts and locking nuts. I modified the seats on all 3 Kubotae I've owned because it felt like they were trying to dump me into the steering wheel.

I don't like having my knees over my feet when operating a tractor. I find that position awkward at best, and my friend finds it intolerable. There is so much more room in the MX6000 cab compared to the L4060 cab (legroom and width), and I learned that those smaller cabbed models wouldn't work for me or for my friend. I like to rotate my torso in the seat when running implements out back and I find that easy to do in both cabs. The M6060 cab is even better than the MX, but the MX cab is still very comfortable. I think he needs to look at an MX4900HSTC if he can find one, or at least an MX5400 or MX6000 to get a feel for the cab.

The buddy or instructor seat could be removed, but I don't really think the M6060/M7060/M4 cab is big enough for that seat, but no doubt some will love it.

One of the many things I like about the M6060 is how easy it is to get in and out of the cab, and how much room there is.

Around 280lb I'd guess. He's a big lad and has always reminded me of a bear, but not a sloppy fat bear, more like an older slightly soft bear with big 'ol paws. 😂 He could walk on the set of The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings and require no costume or makeup and fit right in.

The more I think about it, the more sense it makes for him to look at an MX4900. I think he'd do well with that tractor.

They didn't have any LX tractors to try? The LX4020 might suit him.

I would expect the LX4020 cab to be similar to the L4060 cab in size. I looked on Kubota's website today to see if they provide cab interior dimensions but they don't as far as I can tell, which is a pity. I think that would be useful information.
