Thinking about purchasing a drop spreader, and am looking for suggestions. I know that I can't afford to spend a fortune on one, but what do you suggest? thanks Dust
Drop spreaders need to used in a perfect alignment to get the seed/fertilizer in the correct amount and in perfect rows - which can be a pita in some situations.
A broadcast spreader does a better job of scattering the seed/fertilizer in an overlapping pattern thus making a better overlap of whatever is being spread.
I am considering a 3 point, since a pull behind has never worked well for me in the past. With a drop spreader, I can use it with powdered lime, which is a lot less expensive than the pelletized product.
I have used a 5' pull behind drop to apply pulverized lime. Lime must me dry and NOT damp or it will NOT spread well. If I use granular/pelletized lime I usually use a spin type spreader however you can also use a drop spreader. I always use a spin spreader for applying seed then cultipack or use something for good seed/soil contact. Check farm sales, Craigslist and Marketplace for used one.
