I am new to the forum. I have an L4400 4x4 front end loader. It hasd 160hrs on it. I let a freind use the tractor and since I have gotten it back, I get a smell of a clutch every now and then. I have always made a point not to ride the cLutch and the adjustment is good. The tractor does not show any sign of slipping or anything. Should I be concerned and start saving some money up to have the cluch fixed.
With 160 hours on it there should be warranty coverage. They will not cover abuse unfortunately. It wouldn't hurt to ask your dealer to look at it.
The clutch or flywheel may have developed a "hot spot" that is rubbing because of warping. That could have been caused by operator error and/or excessive heat.
Does the odor come when the clutch is fully engaged (slight slipping)? Or is it when it is being engaged (warped/high spot)? When it is fully disengaged there should not be any odor unless it is badly out of adjustment.
If you have a two-stage clutch that runs the PTO then does the odor come when the PTO is engaged? How about when the clutch is partially depressed to disengage the PTO?
Lots of question, I know, but just trying to figure out the "now and then" timing.
Anyway, hindsight about loaning your tractor may be a learning experience. It may not be related to the problem but certainly causes suspicions.
