Hello folks,
I bought an older tractor about 2 weeks ago. It's an L48 and about 22 years old. I haven't done much with it, except put in a new battery, change oils and filters. Since I got it, I noticed that SOMETIMES when attempting to start it, the key would cycle to the ON position, the glow plug indicator light would come on then off (normally), but then as I cycled the key to START, I'd hear one click coming from the engine area. It was difficult to determine where exactly the click was coming from, because I was working alone and the ignition is a long way from the engine. After a click, If I attempted to again go from RUN to START, nothing happens...not even a click. If I repeated the entire starting sequence from the ignition OFF position a few times, it would click once or start.

The last few days, no matter how many times I repeat the starting process, the engine will not turn over using the key. It will click once per try but never start. If I jump the solenoid to the positive starter wire, the engine turns over normally but does not start. The battery is reading 12.5 volts.

I peeked under the seat, thinking I'd see a safety switch. I didn't find one but didn't know exactly what I was looking for.

Perhaps I need a new ignition. The tractor has been kept outdoors for the last couple of years. I can only imagine how much rain water has gotten to areas not intended to handle the water. What is the next step to tracking down a culprit? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thx,
A. Imondi

next step...
Get the WSM aka WorkShop Manual , or at the very least the wiring diagram for your tractor !

Without that you could spend a LOT of time, toss money away and be no further ahead.
Something that old could have 'vermin modified' wiring, worn out switches, bypassed parts...stuff only YOU can see because we're not there.
Good news is NOT the starter ! Query...did you have the key 'on' when you jumped the starter. If not, engine won't run. If yes, perhaps the 'fuel shutoff' was ,well, shut off .

I've never seen your tractor model in person, hopefully those that own or work on them will post soon.

My 21 year old B7800 started up then off sometimes when I let off the key. Turned out it was going from start and then to off instead of run. Replaced switch for my issue

Welcome to the forum. I like your choice of machine. Concerning your current problem, I have not experienced anything like that with my L48...yet.

You might confirm that the grounding system is doing its job. Good grounds are important for anything electrical. Good luck on your troubleshooting.

OP, try running one side of a jumper cable from the negative battery post to a known good frame/engine ground. Then retry to start it with the keyed ignition switch. My guess is that you have a bad main battery ground.

make sure that the posts and terminal ends are clean and tight as well.

This is an odd model that you can not just jump the starter and get it to start because the start relay needs to engage to send power to not only the starter solenoid but also the run solenoid pull in coil on the engine.

I would start with checking that start relay.
It could be an issue with the relay or inputs top the relay.
The start relay It gets its ground inputs from the PTO/ Range/ HST safety switches.
At the bottom is a PDF of the start sircuit so you can zoom in and read the colors.
