I'm picky about how I drive my car (don't slip the clutch too much) so my idea applies to my tractor, too. Whenever I'm engaging and disengaging the deck, I like to make sure it's at idle. Any thoughts on that? I just seems like it would be a bit harder on it (for no reason) at higher rpms.

I'm also at 17 hours on the tractor and still not taking it over 2500 rpms. It mows fine and I am averaging probably 2-hours a gallon. Other than cutting the grass a little 'cleaner', I cant see the benefit of wide-open mowing at over 3000rpms.

Thoughts?

I reduce engine speed on all or tractors including our two BXs when engaging/disengaging the PTO.

I run them at PTO rated RPM, but know people who don't.

Yup I do the same that takes a lot of snap out of all the parts, at least I think so, then run it up to speed. I do that with every thing,,, Except for the old Plymouth, I would take it to 6 grand and dump it,,,, impressive but really hard on stuff

Same here, low eng speed to engage and then just hi enough to get the job done. I hear my neighbors running their mowers at wide open throttle and I just cringe. NO need for that.

I do not believe you are hurting anything to run implements at rated RPM. The tractor is built to run at rated all day long. The implements are designed for that speed. The mower blade tip speed determines the quality and ease of the cut. As you said, you get a cleaner cut at rated.
I use my implements at 2100 - 2500 RPM - rated is about 2450. Since I have a manual transmission, the cuts per foot is fixed by the gear I'm in. With HST you get to slow down while still maintaining blade tip speed. But it will still cut best with the RPMs near rated.
