I have a Kubota BX2660. It is now five years old. It is for a large apartment community so we use it every day. The maintenance and care are handled very well and on schedule. About eight months ago we had the gears in the transmission to the 4-wheel drive fail. The mechanic split the transmission and said it was abuse. My guys were switching to 4-wheel drive before the tractor was fully stopped. The gears became rounded and not able to engage correctly. I accepted his explanation and informed my crew to proper operations. (poor design if you ask me) Splitting the transmission for this repair was expensive. When they had it apart we replaced recommended parts do to rust and ware. All of this to the tune of $5,400.00. I expected the transmission and tractor to now last many years without repairs. We replaced extra parts because we want quality and longevity.

So, here I am today looking at another transmission split. The bearing to the gear shaft failed. When it failed pieces of metal went everywhere. They are recommending about every part in the transmission to be replaced do to the metal that could get into other bearings and parts. This includes the transmission case. (Great that they don’t sell the whole transmission!) Another $5,460.00!!! I’m thinking this cannot be abuse. My guys do not drive poorly going forward and reverse causing this failure. We mow lawns, plow snow and mulch moving with a bucked loader. They could not call this abuse but could not explain the bearing failure. These things just happen. I got a juicy eight months to spend another 5K???

So here are the questions. Did anyone else have this bearing or gear issue? What would cause the bearing to fail? Could they have done something to cause the problem when they had it apart the first time? Is it my luck that I got the only tractor that fails with this problem? Frustrating!

Thanks,
Bill
