Hello,
I was working with my BX2200 earlier today and while using the FEL my right front axle fell out (the whole hub assembly with the tire still attached). I was able to use the loader to lift the front, slide the axle/hub back in and limp it to the garage. I did a quick inspection and I don't see anything actually broke. So how do I reinstall the axle? On some vehicles I cave worked on you can pop the axle back in with a sharp shove. They are held in with a spring clip of sorts. This is my first tractor and I don't want to break it trying to reinstall or make it more complicated than needed. Sorry for the no pics currently. I should be able to upload them tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the help

I would look on line and find a work shop manual for your tractor. You can also go to Messick's parts catalog and look at the diagrams for the front axle.

Do not jam the axle in there. The split collar 080 holds the axle in. The bevel gear 050 holds the collar on the axle. No choice but to pull it apart. Hopefully you didn't do any gear damage with loose parts in the gear case. Check the recess on the bevel gear that holds the split collar in place for cracks.

Thanks. I hopped on the computer this morning and checked out the diagram. I will inspect it all when I take it apart. The split collar is only about $14 online, so I hope that’s all it is.

Took it all apart and everything looks in good shape. No cracks or gear damage to be seen. Bearing look good and tight. The pieces of the split collar are no where to be found. I will go though it again to make sure before installing the new one.

Collar parts are probably behind the bevel drive gear.... pieces have to be in there somewhere. Check for wear on them and the axle stub. Curious as to why it let go... it's a pretty snug fit. And you certainly don't want it to happen again.

Axle lube looks milky from here indicating water. Good time to change that too. There are little drain plugs in the bottom of the knuckle gear cases.

I believe the collar pieces are sold individually. You'll need 2. Don't forget seals.

I felt around behind the gear with my fingers as best I could and didn’t feel anything. The gear spun easy. I will fish with my magnet some to see if I pull anything out.

Not sure why it broke. Don’t know the exact year. It is a BX2200 so that puts it in the 18-20 yr old range I believe.

I am assuming the gear oil weight is listed in my owners manual.
