I have a BX2200 with a RCK60-22BX belly mower. I noticed some noise when running the deck so I started taking apart the spindles/bearings. The center shaft had a lot of play and a very bad bearing in the holder. After taking the gearbox off, I noticed the output shaft of the gearbox has play, meaning the output shaft can be pushed into the gearbox to the point the pulley rubs on the gearbox housing. Is this normal or is this an indication there is a lot of wear in the gearbox. When I looked at the exploded parts diagrams on the Messicks website, it was not obvious how I could eliminate this play with shims. Since gravity will cause the shift to pull outward from the gearbox when installed, does this play really hurt anything? Thanks for any help.

Bevel gears, which are what is inside your mower deck gearbox, need to be established in a set position so as they have a load applied they are not moving away from the driving gear.

Shims, often more than one, are used to position the shaft and gears.

Gravity is a small force compared to the ones generated by the mating bevel gears,

Because the gearboxes are expensive, it would be worthwhile to have yours rebuilt by someone with experience.

The amount of play you have is not acceptable.

Watch this youtube video. It deals with a more elaborate bevel gearbox than your but it has info you would benefit from.
