Installed a new starter solenoid on my BX1500. When I finished putting everything back together and connected the negative battery terminal, either the solenoid or the starter started running. Any thoughts on what’s going on? I’m pretty certain it’s the solenoid because the tractor didn’t crank.

Odds are the 'control' wire of the starter solenoid has +12 on it for some reason.
perhaps it's shorting to the big +12 feed stud ?

If it was a clicking sound it's the solenoid engaging, if it's a whirling sound it's the starter spinning, and no it will not crank the engine without the solenoid being engaged too, that engages the bendix.
