I just got an old Bush Hog model 600. The gear box needs lube. What weight and how much?

If it the seals are bad, where can I get parts or should I just add 000 grease instead?

Thanks.

90W Gear Oil will work just fine. If you do end up needing seals any dealer that carries the Bush Hog brand should have them in stock for you, or be able to get them!

If there isn't a dealer near you any good NAPA store can usually cross reference a seal if you have the numbers. Sometimes the blade shaft output seals are a little harder to cross out because they're a shielded seal, input side is ususlly a standard seal. A quarter cup of automatic transission or power steering stop leak with your gear oil may be enough to soften up died out seals. Cracked or torn seals will need replaced.

Depends on how you want to treat your equipment, but...

Those seals can be a huge PiA to get to and repair. Have had to heat stump-jumper with torch thus finishing killing the seals resulting in having to continue the repair no matter what.

I started using that thick syrupy motor-honey (cheap STP I guess) added to 80-90W and after a while the gearbox fluid got thick enough it stopped leaking. Can't recommend it but did work for me. Different brands but buck a bottle at WM last time I bought any.

I've seen a lot of neighbors that when leaks occur just use a tube of grease-gun grease pumped straight into the gearbox. Makes me cautious about buying used equipment.

Otherwise, just fill the gearbox till it runs out the fill hole.
