We’ll I have a decent sized issue that developed yesterday evening. As I was wrapping up clearing in my woods on my way back to the barn I broke off the oil drain plug on the rear axle housing. I found the drain plug but not the chunk of the housing that came off with it. Taking it to the repair shop tomorrow morning. Their estimate is about $1800 and will take them around 10 days. Sucks to be me. I’ll post a picture later.

I'm at a loss for words...did you price a replacement part from Kubota for comparison?

Having trouble visualizing what you are taking for repair. And what the repair shop is. Do you mean taking it to a Kubota dealer, or taking the part to a shop to have repaired/fabricated?

My son in law has the same tractor. So your post naturally caught my interest.

I want to say I "look forward" to seeing the photos, but that sounds too positive for this situation...

The actual axle cover broke where the oil drain plug screws in. I contemplated a cheaper repair but in the end I want a reliable machine so I felt this was the best route.

Unless there is cracking that doesn't show up in the photo, a good welder and machine shop may be able to repair it. If the drain plug sticks down, get a new one with a hex socket so it fits flush.

I looked for the missing piece in the hopes I could weld it on but no dice. The hex socket is a great idea to any and all bx owners and I’ll look into that.

A good welder and machine shop doesn’t need the missing pieces. Build it back up with weld, grind it to something reasonable, drill, tap, put in a flush plug.

If it wasn’t a 3 year old machine I’d probably try that route. As bad as it sucks to foot the bill for this I’m going to go forward with the swap. It’s not a good situation as it is. I stillhave to figure it how to get it in the trailer with no power. Luckily I had it in the barn before it laid down on me this time. I couldn’t imagine it being dead in the woods on my property

What did you hit to break it? It must have been significant.

A rock barely protruding from the ground I believe. That’s where I found the drain plug on the ground. Had to have hit just right. I’m ordering Bro Tek skid plates for future protection.

I'm leaning towards the bad casting theory as the root cause. Hard to tell from the photo but it looks like possibly some porosity in the boss.

If it is talk to the K rep see if they will give you a break on parts

Thanks for the tip. I’m taking it to the stealership so hopefully if it was a production issue they will do me right.

Expect the worst, anything else will be better. I wouldn't hold my breath that they'll offer significant help. It isn't a manufacturing defect, it was hitting a rock that caused it.

I’m not looking for a bail out but if one comes I’ll take it lol. I’ve always had to pay full rate for my mistakes and this is just another example of that. I still find it hard to believe the rock that caused this was enough. It’s barely out of the ground. I guess the combination of soft loamy soil and a bushhog were enough to take away my ground clearance.

The added weight of the bush hog may have contributed. Instead of (possibly) sliding over, the least resistance was to break the case.
Sorry that it happened. Life lessons can be excessive, sometimes.
