Box blade for snow?

I Usually plow with a blade mounted on my loader arms but find it difficult to pull snow away from garage doors. We get nice heavy snow that packs well so is hard to pull back. I was thinking of a back blade but feel it may not be heavy enough for ballast. Then I thought maybe a box blade. I could take out the center digging bars and then just use it to pull the snow back from the garage doors and in the summer use it to flatten out my lawn.

Would the box blade get packed with snow and then become unusable?

I have a BX2200 so was thinking about a 4' box blade.

So is this a crazy idea?

Not going to be the best idea ....... You better push it backwards if anything - forward will be a cluster......
A back blade is fine for snow - and a 5' would be a good bit of ballast to boot.

You will only be able to get within a bout 2 feet of the garage doors with a box (assuming door is closed) - where as a scraper will get as close as you are willing.

Box blades will clog up almost instantly going forward - and when going backwards it will act like a mini FEL...... ok but not as good as a scraper blade turned correctly in both axis.

A box blade is MUCH better for leveling out a "hilly" yard - the scraper will not do as well.

A couple years ago I saw a video of someone using a box blade to clear snow. He was using his FEL and his box blade and did a very good job with that. As 85Hokie said, dragging a box forward will fill it very quickly and then you have to get the snow out of the box. Not very effective at all. However, pushing rearward worked very well in the video I saw.

Oh, one more thing came to mind. Spray some cooking oil on the implement that you decide to use. That will make the snow not stick to it.

Rear blade, angle it so snow rolls off. Get one with offset and push snow beyond tractor wheels. My blade weighs 709

You can run a box blade AND the front blade. Did that with a CJ-5 for years. backup to building, drop blades and move snow, all day long. The box blade ONLY grabs the snow under the tractor.
Hopefully you have enough HP and traction to 'push and pull'.
Not too sure why you can't get closer than 2' though..I could get withing 2 inches.

yeah - I was off my rail when thinking that, I was thinking of the front end ONLY - the box once dropped down would def get closer to the door than 2 feet. And good point of getting most of snow out of way and allowing box to scoop the rest.

As for grip - my old jubilee would get a little sideways with a back blade getting into a deep snow, that had R1's and chains and weights on the front too. Amazing how wet snow weighs a huge amount even when the blade is turned 30 degrees.

I find that is I use the front blade and my 60 inch back blade I can get right to the garage doors with the back blade .pull away and then push the snow with the front blade. Not having a box blade I cant say how it would work. One long runs down the drive way the front blade is streight and I angle the back blade to one side or the other. It works for me.

I use a rear blade to pull the snow away from our buildings and walkways. I dont see any benefits to using a box blade for snow. I suppose if thats all you got, as others have already said, better to push than to fill the box full of snow. Sounds like a nightmare to me though.

The box blade will 'trap' and carry' the snow so you get(well...should..) a nice clean run every time unlike a 'rear blade'' that'll leave the 'edge snow' behind, so you need to cleanup the dribbles....

I sometimes use the BB fall and spring with wet snow over stone that isn't frozen down. Long top link to avoid digging in.

Like Jay said, I just pull the box full and out of the way. Works and helps build a base in the fall.

Had to go to the dealer yesterday to get power steering hoses. Looked over their Land Pride 48" box blade I like it all except for the price $995. May look around some more. It's funny, I thought I replied to this thread twice with updates, but I don't see them here

My 60" box blade is a great partner with the front snow blower. A good counterbalance, and rear tire traction improver, and it can get close to structures like my garage door and easily pull a snowbank away from it to be scooped and thrown after by the snow

blower. Also if there's packed frozen snow/ice to move later in the winter the BB1560 can scrape and gather it up with ease.

I know exactly what the problem is, you are using computers . I worked on computers and more specifically disk drives for 55 years and totally understand. I was not aware of the backup issues and just thought I was going crazy(er)

Gosh - - that's the truth! I'm tech idiot....and now that we don't have young people around the house anymore, I'm kinda lost..
