Bi speed steering questions

My L1-285 kubota has bi speed steering and I'm a little confused on it. The biggest question is with the 4wd. After looking at parts diagrams, it appears the 4wd engages with a spring loaded clutch pack and when disengaged, the lever is pushing against the spring loaded pack. So, will it cause wear on the clutch fork when I run it disengaged? Should it be engaged or disengage the majority of the time? In a traditional sliding gear I would leave it disengaged most of the time but I'm just not familiar with this system.

Leaving it engaged will lead to driveline bindup wearing or breaking wheel bearings, axle & diff gears, driveshaft, etc. The selectors and clutch packs are running in an oil bath or are otherwise lubed, right?
