I don't lift super heavy stuff with my little 3901, but you know 500 pounds here and there.

I have some big towing straps, but I don't have a good way of adjusting their length and then un-adjusting it ;)

I added hooks to the top of my FEL bucket, so that helps.

I kind of like the nylon straps more than steel chains, but I'm open to ideas. Again, ADJUSTABLE LENGTH is essential.

What types of items are you lifting?
You already have bucket hooks. So my vote goes to 5/16 chain.

Miscellaneous small farm stuff. Implements, pallets of stuff, old washing machines, 80 gallons of water in a tank...

I’ve got same set up as Tractor Mike suggests…it works great for me.

It’s not adjustable, but having a couple different lengths give you some options.

Here’s a video, maybe this gives some ideas?

For taking length (slack) out of the chain I use two grab hooks that are joined together.

one like this

and one like this

put the pin through the hole of the first hook and use the two hooks to grab links of the chain.

I’ve used ratchet straps for adjustable lift straps. It’s obviously not their intended use, but lifting 500 lbs with a 2” strap rated for 3,300 lbs should be fine as long as you have a few wraps on the spool so it doesn’t slip.

I like to use straps unless chains are clearly a better option. I have a pair of 4', 6', and a 9' that I use logging so they are on hand. They work good with a tooth bar or grapple. Happened to need a battery charge out on the landing today so took a picture.

While talking straps - if you ever need to connect two together then put a dowel in the joint so they come apart easy.

Use a short length of chain with a hook to take up length. It's obviously easier to loosen compared to almost anything else once the load is lowered since you only need to take the chain out of the hook.

For hooking to the load, I use a D-Ring with strap or chain depending on what I'm lifting.

Chains on bucket hooks are the way to go. For 500 lb lifts you would be fine with 1/4" chain. I have a pair of 1/4" in my John Deere tool box and 5/16" chains in the Kubota. I have picked up my 1100 lb generator with the 1/4" chains and the John Deere. A couple of 10 footers is all you need. Super easy to choke up on the bucket hooks assuming you put chain hooks on it and not the rounded slip hooks.

FYI Walmart has a good price on metal ammo boxes. They work great for tools and chain storage.
