I have a 1/2 mile steep gravel driveway with as much as a 20% grade. I have a BX24 and a Land Pride grading scraper which I use at least once a year.
I think I need a gravel rake to pull uphill at an angle from both sides of the driveway. It would help with vegetation control and move the gravel where I need it. Plus it would help with weed control in the flat gravel up by the house.
I want a real gravel mover not a leaf rake.

thanks, Peter IMG_1286.jpeg

Search for York rake or landscape rake, I think that is what you want.

I've thought about buying one, but found if I mow a strip along the driveway and keep the runners on the gravel, it works pretty well.

Late farmer dragged I-beam and chains behind his tractor, every Sunday, after church, before brunch. He had the BEST driveway in the county, hands down. Simple and effective. I copied his 'high tech ' setup on a smaller scale( used garden tractor) and my driveway and parking area(20 cars looked great too !

Was it more effective to operate before brunch? ;)

Looking at your drive I wouldn't go with a cheap one.

North of you on the boarder to Canada. Could maybe find one closer.

If you want to drag substantial amounts of gravel uphill, a simple Box Blade is your friend, and it will grade your flat areas too. I have a shorter, but very steep, drive at our property in north Georgia, and all I use is a box blade.

You can also use your bucket (especially if you have a toothbar, like my Piranha). Tilt the bucket down at a 30 degree angle, and put the loader in float. You can back drag as you back up your driveway.

Plain Old 'Countyline' rake from Tractor Supply has worked fine for me.

If you need to actually 'move' gravel some distance it will do that too, depending on how you set the angle (with your top link). I drag driveway gravel all the time with mine.

Good day.

I’ve never rakedd or graded a driveway like what you described with a BX, so I may be of low or no help.

For wanted to rake or pull the material uphill, do you have a traction issue pulling your plane up the hill? I’d think about that first.

then if had nothing how would you do manually…would you take with a garden rake up the hill or scoop with a shovel to bucket and carry up hill and then take back down?

to me a Harley is awesome…ve watch them in use online and in person and they are awesome at one thing. However they leave spoils to be cleaned up as a second pass or after the pass. I’ve only seen them used on flat ground…I’d rent one vs buying first to make sure it would for your purpose.

if you think you have the traction to pull a box blade it should bring some up the hill, but how much do you have? To get into the box (lots of trips or just a few?)

is a significant amount that maybe you want to scooop with loader and bring up hill to rake or grade back down?

I recently bought a rake and what I would wonder is how much gravel could I take up a grade…I’d probably scoop it and transfer to top and grade back down. I don’t know that is correct but I would try that first.

I would also offer that a hydraulic top link and tilt function would be helpful with a rake. So is a wheel kit…all three if you think you will need to trim the implement a lot.

IMO it sort of depends on the process or processes you want to have and direction of travel for the work.…I am not certain there is a perfect tool for what you described.

is there a reason you can’t scoop the t take it uphill and grade it downhill? (I’ve not used a plane before so I am asking)

just my couple thoughts. (As I stated might be low or no help🤷‍♂️).

Attached is a screenshot from Google Earth of my driveway.
There is a 345’ elevation difference between the county road and the house. Some of the drag tools look cool but there is no place to turn around at the county road. I am 84 years old. I need the 3 point hitch to load and remove implements and to turn around.
I showed a picture of my tractor and grading scraper about 1/2 way up the driveway where the grade is only 10%.
The grading scraper is made to pull gravel from the edge to the center. Starting from the house downhill it’s pretty smooth. At the bottom one starts up pulling gravel and this takes a lot more skill balancing the depth of cut with limited traction of the BX24. Over a period of time with repeated gradings it creates an odd distribution of gravel.
i need something with an adjustable angle so I can pull gravel uphill where ever I want.
I think a rake would be better than a back blade.

Thanks for all the suggestions

Peter

The Columbia River is at the bottom of the pic.
