I want to fabricate my own ballast box using concrete, is there a formula that I can use to help me decide on the best option... such as width and weight.

Well - the weight of a #80 bags of concrete ....is obviously 80 lbs - but that will take up .6 of a cubic foot. Water weighs about 63 lbs per cubic foot. Sand weighs about 100 lbs per cubic foot.

If you made the box ..... but used another media in it ........ sand, gravel even water - once removed, it could be used for another purpose. A "carry all" could also be used as a ballast box with the right weight on it.

A good number to shoot for would be something above 400 lbs - maybe even 500lbs - depending on what your plans are for the front end.

AS for the size - there a several different models out there to mimic if desired.

I used the bottom half of a 55 gallon plastic drum and 4 bags of quickcreat only because it was free. If I was to do it again, I would go to TS of RK and get a 3 point carry all, board it up and then set the half barrel on it and chain it in place then fill with sand or stone,, just MHO

I made a counter weight using 3 (60lb) bags of quickcrete and placed angle iron in the cement with the idea of welding a receiver tube and attaching it to my 3 point hitch, I haven't tried it yet but I have this feeling it won't work, I'm thinking it should be at least the width of the tractor and weigh 400 lbs or more.I fabricated a detachable extension for the bucket and I use to it to move firewood around....it has been a bit sketchy when moving firewood around on uneven ground...yes...I do keep the bucket as low to the ground as possible when doing this.

use a carryall with forks and place weight on a skid. Makes it SIMPLE and EASY to get the weight when needed. I have 2 skids ( one light, one heavy ).
EVERYTHING that is 3 point hitchable NEEDS to be EASY to get on/off.

Don’t know your circumstances, but a carry-all isn’t a bad idea.

I use mine as ballast sometimes, but it also has many utilitarian purposes.

Can get a frame from TSC or similar stores, then build as you choose.
