I need to know how to remove the pin that holds the cylinder in the main boom of a BH65 back hoe. I have removed the bolt but the pin wont seem to move. the cylinder is not under tension and the boom is supported. I am afraid to tap it any harder.

This is a new one on me, every joint on my tractor and backhoe are plenty loose. Some might even say sloppy.

Does this joint take grease? Does the pin move at all yet? It could be rusted if not greased and has sat unused a while. I'd soak it good with PB Blaster or Kroil and then get after it with a bigger hammer. Just don't beat it until the ends are mushroomed. Only other possibility I can think of is the pin might be bent. You might need to figure out a way to get the boom into a press.

Ouch, I was hoping to avoid the press idea, It does have a zirc (sp ? ) fitting and it has been maintained, even recently, the end of the cylinder does move freely on the pin but the pin wont budge, If I could just confirm that it is a press ( or bent ) fit then I could confidently hit it a bit harder.

If I do suceed in removing it how in the heck do I get the retaining bolt lined back up again to re install?

This joint does take a lot of loading. I'll just have to keep after it this morning.

I second Magkarl's suggestions.

Sometimes heat on the bosses can also help but you don't want to heat the cylinder rod so much you damage the cylinder packing.

Once you have it out, clean the bosses up and inspect the pin for straightness and pitting. If it is straight and smooth, or made smooth, it should slide back in with no real effort.

It is probably unlikely that the bosses are out of alignment but anything is possible. You could probably (carefully) hone their bores until the pin moved freely, if that were the case. Also, if grease is not getting into the bosses, when you reassemble, use some anti seize compound there.

Got it! Thanks for the help. I used penetrant and some heat and a good thumpin.

Now I need a procedure to rebuild it so I don't muff it up!

Thanks again,

Scott
