What is the trick to replace the thowout bearing? I know it is pressed on but how do you get the assembly off to press off/on the new bearing? Do you have to remove the entire clutch rod assembly? Screw, spring, zerk, clutch rod, fork and then slide it foward through the seal? This is all I like before putting it back together.

thanks.

Ok, took the entire clutch rod assembly out including the spring/bolt/zerk and it slid right out. Popped the bearing off in the press and tapped the new one on. Cleaned everything up and right back in.

Thanks for the info - splitting my 1980 B7100 next month to replace clutch/pressure plate/throw out bearing, etc. PO said clutch was worn when I bought it a year ago as free play adjustment was all used up. Used it for a year now & it never slips but clutch pedal MUST be fully depressed to disengage clutch - works a bit better after a good work out (skidding logs).

Glad it you got it worked out btackett.

Piker that could just be clutch adjustment. How's the free play? Also before I took mine apart the clutch only completely disengaged in the last 1/2in of peddle travel so I assume it's normal for these things.

Stumpy - as per my post, one of the reasons I got this tractor so cheap (along with a pair of my hand crafted canoe paddles & awesome horse trading skills), the PO told me up front that the clutch should be changed as there was no pedal free play and the adj. was all used up. If I wasn't so curious as to what the problem is, I would just keep using the tractor as-is. Clutch never slips regardless of load, middle buster, rear blade, skidding firewood, but gears always grind when shifting from Neutral to any gear. When using tractor I can shift from any gear to Reverse or vice versa with clutch fully depressed & no grinding as long as I don't shift into Neutral, let the clutch out, depress the clutch & try to select a gear. Something is worn - disc, fingers on pressure plate, fork on throw out bearing? Won't know until I split the tractor.

Wow there it is plain as day, sorry must have missed that in your first post. If you've only got an external adjuster then yeah it's clutch time. If it also has adjusters on the clutch fingers they might just need to be adjusted in to put the external adjuster back within it's range. Something that might be worth trying before splitting it.

Stumpy, I didn't realize you could access anything in there from the outside! I have the service manual (huge, very bad photocopy) but never looked it up. We are in the middle of a cold snap (-20C last 2 mornings) & 'ol faithful is semi-buried in our latest snow fall, so might be a few days before I shovel the tractor out & have a look. Thanks for the info.
