B7100 front axle assembly

I read recently (here I think) that early 4 wheel drive B7100s had a "ball" type front axle (old jeep style) and later ones had a gear hub type axle. My 1980 is the old style. My questions are:
Are they interchangeable? Exact drop in, can be made to fit, or completely incompatible?
What year did they change?

My 1985 is the old style,it may be worth checking out the parts list for the later ones which were probably hydro's! to see if they changed?

Thanks for the reply. I asked the same question on another site, and one gentleman thought it was doable, if I also swapped the driveline & drag link. Mine is completely functional, but tired & leaky. I just wondered if it was an option to swap to the newer style, rather rebuild my old style. i guess I'll keep my eyes peeled for a deal on a complete hub type, unless circumstances force me to fix up the old one first.
