I am gearing to up rebuild the front axle on my B6000 but I have a few questions. First is I’m wondering if anyone knows whether or not the knuckle ball ends on the axle housing should be painted or left raw metal?

My second is if anyone knows if the universal joints can be substituted with any off the shelf ones that would be cheaper. I know I should be able to measure the ones that I have to see if I can cross reference some but I don’t want to damage the good ones trying to remove them as they are about $90 a piece from every Kubota source I’ve found and the one I need to replace is so damaged I don’t think I could get an accurate measurement from it.

Sorry if any of this is obvious but I’m still learning about most things

I have always left them raw metal, but one thing I would recommend- if the seals for that ball end include a felt seal, replace it with new, and saturate it with oil before installation.
I use 85-140w gear oil.
If you don't, the felt will collect & trap water and cause rust to form.
(speaking from lots of experience with various off road axles & one B7100 axle)
