Hi,
I am switching my carrier and ring gear assy over to my new rear end case. In the old case, the backlash was .010 (final drives removed, pinion held still). In the new case, the value is .014. I have the service manual which specifies .004 to .008 ideal, but allowable up to .016. I tryed to move shims from the right side to the left side but they are different OD's. I have to check with the dealer on availability of shims, but in the meantime, thought I'd inquire what values others have had good/bad experience running.
thanks, Carl

As I understand gears from setting up backlash on them from dragging plows to drag racing this spec is pretty standard to the technology. In other words backlash does not vary much with gears regardless of the application.

I would think of the difference of your .010 and the spec, as wear. You can run that .014 but if it doesn't make noise immediately then it will soon.

I would try to set it within spec for no noise and longevity.
