I was mowing down tall weeds with a 48" deck pto and I noticed a change in power. I then started to smell a burnt rubber type of smell so I lifted up the hood and noticed that smoke was coming from the dynamo/alternator and it also looked like water was coming out from behind the pulley. I turned off the tractor and let it cool. I then checked the radiator fluid and it was good. The water behind the pulley that I had seen had evaporated so I don't understand how it got there. I tried to start it again but now it won't turn over. Do I need a new regulator or what else could be going on?

Remove the fan belt and then try the alternator and water pump by hand. I'll wager one of them is frozen up and the smell was the fan belt burning.

I took off the alternator and I can't turn anything on it. There is a pile of black dust (probably from the belt) on the underside. The belt heated up too much and started to smoke and melt. The bottom side of the belt feels crusty too. The water pump moves fine. I will bring the alternator in to get tested but I am sure it went bad.

Seized bearing in the alternator. It wouldn't start because the seized alternator was causing enough drag through the belt to overcome the starter. Replace that and the belt and everything will be good to go.

It'll actually start and run just fine right now with the fan belt is off. You just can't go very far because it'll start overheating and you're battery will be discharging (slowly) but you could probably get it back to the garage.
