I better rethink the dam I was going to build on my creek to make a swim hole.

When your guardrails get wet, it’s perfectly acceptable to simply leave them in the sun to dry. There’s really no need to wring them out like a dishrag. But as is often stated here after an opinion… YMMV.

I’m guessing something got caught on the guard rail and acted like a paddle wheel to twist it up? Amazing!

By the looks of the background photo this is flood damage am I correct? All I can say is it took a lot of power/energy to twist a steel guard rail like that. Thats just unreal 😳🤯

My intuition tells me The water must’ve been flowing left the right in the photo… But I imagine this could happen with water flowing in either direction, and end up being a CW or CCW wind.

Looks like the beam holding the guard rail was washed out of the ground and it became a wind up key.
I think you are right, that tapered section just at the end of the twist may be where the guardrail joins a smaller section that goes into the ground. When the high water washed out that area the smaller section likely had a round piece or chunk of concrete attached to the end that rotated with the water flow.

Here is a video of the damage in my area. It has a good view of the Thrie-Beam transitioning into a W type. We have bridges that were destroyed about 10 years ago and are still not open. The money goes to the big cities on each end of the state and very little for us.

Here is one closed since a storm in 2018.

Southeast of York.
I look at PA as having armpits on each end with a butt in the middle. Yes, the area close around the butt gets plenty but we just get the bills.
