Tilling with the L-185 and a Befco G50, today, heard a bang, thought I hit something. Lookrd back, drive shaft spinning, but tiller reel wasn't turning. OK, I thought shear bolt, But NOOOOOOOOOOO, snapped drive chain, in the gear drop box. Easy to tell by the dent forcing the drop box cover outward. Guess I need a new drive chain, at least...

Halfway through a job, about 20 mins from home, the fastest way to finish the last of this little job was to run back home and return in the little truck, with the Baretto 13 HP. That thing is a BEAST, wore me out good, in about an hours work...

How DO I get myself in these situations...:D:D

Most drive chain is standard sizes. Look online for how to measure the chain you have to find out what size you have. Tractor supply sells it and so does Grainger and McMaster Carr. NAPA may carry it or look for "power transmission" stores in your area.

Lucked out. Chain is 60H, and I have 3 master links in the drawer. Got it apart, all I could find was busted chain, bent tensioner bolt, deformed steel by bolt, and a swelling in the gear case, the last 2 will be repaired by BFH. what caused it all was a cat 5 shear bolt, where a soft bolt should be...:D:D

Well, I got her mostly back together...

About 4 hrs workin on it, off and on. Cleaned up the old grease, and the gear cover, hadda gallon can of turpentine, nearby, so I used that. Hadda thread a 1.5 x 75 mm bolt, cause fastnall didn't have an all threaded one. Also hadda bend the chain tensioner bolt, cause I didn't get all the bend outta the gear box... 2 gear cover bolts needed some dressing with a thread file. Had 2 tubes of food grade grease that's been layin on a shelf, for like 10 years, looked just like butter, when I put it in. Gonna put in a 1/2 pint of conklin's version of STP, too, as soon as I tighten up the gear cover.

'Bout the only thing left to do is to yank the drive shaft off, and grind down the the thicknesses of the shear bolt bosses, so's a 1-1/2" bolt and locknut will fit real good. I don't know why these mfr's can't put a standard length bolt, in as a shear pin.:D:D
