4 cyl turbo generator

I joined to ask for help with a Kabota 4 cylinder turbo powering the generator in my motorhome. While researching on line this site kept popping up. Seem like a great deal of knowledge!!!
The generator was running rough a while ago and I pulled the fuel line after the pump and observed what I guess was aglae (white slime). I replaced the filters and cleaned out the tank and all seemed good for several hours. It stated running rough again and I thought I might as well swap out the filter again in case I did not get everything out. I used the jet start valve to purge the air and it seemed to run fine after, but for only about 12 min and then it would die. I could not get it started without out re-purging the air and then it would start and run for 12 min and then die again. This is repeatable over and over again. I discovered it will run indefinitely if I leave the jet start valve open???? I’m not sure what would cause this. I’m tempted to just leave it open, but I have not tried the generator under a load in this condition. As a further point of information which may or may not relevant… I installed a fuel pressure gauge just before the injector pump. It reads between 3 and 4 psi when running and with the valve open drops to zero when the gen is shut off. With the valve closed it will hold 3 psi when the generator (and electric pump) is off. I’m thinking I might be sucking air in somewhere on the input side of the pump or maybe the return line is clogged. Do these symptoms mean anything to anyone????

Any more information on the engine such as a serial/model number?

Seems a little odd to have a turbo'd engine for a generator on a motorhome, but I've seen stranger things.

It’s a 20kw unit from powertech on a 2002 Newell coach. I’ll look harder tomorrow, but I was unable to find any data tags. I initially thought it was a yanmar engine, but after talking to someone familiar with Newell and sending a pic they told me it was a Kabota.

Well we can't help you as a Kabota is a chinese knock off of a KUBOTA. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

You need to check all the vents.
Try running it with the fuel cap off.
Does it have it's own fuel tank or does it share the coaches fuel tank?

I'll suggest to check for good fuel flow from tank to inj pump. Is fuel tank vent open? Many yrs ago I had a similar fuel problem on a Kubota M4900 tractor that local dealer service manager advised me to check for blockage in water separator housing. Upon closer inspection I located a tiny screen in water seperater housing that was clogged. Cleaned that screen & engine not operating problem was solved.

Thank you for the reply’s! I guess my first trouble shooting move will be spelling lessons! Next I think I’ll just try running it from a clean diesel can bypassing the filters. I don’t think it’s a venting problem as the generator shares the same tank as the Detroit diesel, and it runs fine. I will report back on the results of trying to run the generator on just a separate tank. Thanks again!!

Try to get some pictures of your setup and any ID tags on the motor. Will help with helping you.

That’s a picture. I took a couple of days ago when I get back out to the motorhome I’ll see if I can get some better pictures or maybe find a data tag.

Doesn't really matter which engine model or version you have, a fuel problem is a fuel problem.

Things to check:
Fuel flow into the separator / filter, fuel flow out of the separator/ filter, fuel flow out of the lift pump, if if lift pump is mechanical should pulse fuel when cranking or running, if electric should flow fuel slowly with key on.
Is there a vent line coming off of the top of the separator/ filter housing?

If it has a canister type separator/filter, there may be an elbow after/at the inlet that can become plugged with grass, biological growth, leaves…

You can get it cleaned out somehow but I don’t recall how people have cleaned that. Some people just replace the housing but that is normally not needed, just the cleaning.

There are some additives for the fuel that will break down the biological growth as they also kill it off.
