What is the safest and, therefore, "best" type of 3-point hitch drawbar to use on an L-series tractor?

Some are merely straight bars between the two lower links. And, another is triangular shaped and connects to all 3 links.

The purpose of getting one is to provide for an adjustable height for a ball hitch.

There two different draw bars. One is attached under the tractor and does swing with limits determined by pins you can move somewhat. This is designed for pulling implements that require a low center of gravity. Or pulling on anything.

The other is a swinging draw bar. It attaches to the arms of the tractor and has linch pins to hold it. It also has several holes going across it to attach a ball or whatever to.

If you attach a ball to the swinging draw bar to move a trailer you will need to fabricate a piece of metal to keep the bar from rotating. It sets in the balls on the tractor arms freely and can rotate without resistance.

D2Cat has a good explanation. The single bar (w/lots of holes) going from lower lift arm to lower lift arm is designed for a clevis-type attachment. That is, the attachment has a top tongue with a hole and a bottom tongue with a hole. The single bar on the 3PH goes between those tongues and a pin through the holes keeps it all together.

If you put a ball on the single bar, it will rotate and be unacceptable. But devices are made to keep it from rotating. There are several designs.

The "A" frame type of hitch, where the top is attached to a top link, is better for hooking up trailers with a ball hitch in my opinion. They are regularly sold on eBay.

To add I picked up one from Omni Manufacturing called a Transformer, works as a ball mount, 5th wheel/gooseneck and also log skidded. Very well built & good support from the manufacturer.
