3 point hay spear plans?

Looking to build a 3 pt spear for round bales. Anyone done this? Any plans to share or links to plans?

Shouldn't take much for plans, they're fairly simple. Some claim the type of bale you primarily use determines the style of spears. Some have the one main spear and two smaller spikes to keep the bail from spinning when it's picked up. Others have two of the larger spike, and that's it.

If your bales are tight in the center or loose is the determining factor for the spikes.

If you check your local Craig's List you can probably find a used one pretty reasonable.

Thanks for the links. Shipping from either is a non-starter to AK unfortunately. I've been looking on CL, but to no avail.
Got a neighbor that is an Ace1 welder. Will have to see if he has time in his schedule.

Way back when I was much younger we used a truck axle for the spear, it worked

tractor supply and others sell them fairly reasonably.

I put a 3pt to receiver hitch on my tractor ($55 delivered) and use it for lots of things.

You can put a spike in the receiver bit or they sell (google it) spikes and spike mounts you can weld onto the hitch.

I got mine off ebay, but harbor freight has them, versions are sold as gooseneck hitch adapters, etc.

Seems easier and cheaper to start with the basic item and add the mounts.

Ironbender, since you're going to fabricate from scratch, you might check with a hyd. repair shop and see if you can pick up a scraped cyl. and use the ram for your spear. Someone with a lathe can make a nice point on it, or a chop saw can triangulate the end to work.

I'd think you'd have some farm supply store that would inventory some bale spears. If so, make a sleeve to mount it in. Then if you break it (yes it does happen) you can remove it for replacement.

I have a 3pt spear for bales 4x4 frame with a 1x4 pointed main spear adjustable height with a chain already on it works well it is now sitting in the snow i have changed to large square bales that i use for my bucket setup

if you can figure the shipping costs and give me a reasonable offer i could try to get it to you

If you haven't already, you might consider getting a fork to get under the bales. The fork will get under the bale, lifting it a little higher so if you're going to be dealing with deep ruts, you could end up dragging the bale. Otherwise the spear should be OK.
