I don’t have a L3302. Looked at the instructions in the OM to confirm it works same as my L4701. Per the L3302 OM, they work the same. A bit over 600 hours, I’ve never done anything other than auto regens. I have never touched the DPF Inhibit switch.
Unless the DPF Inhibit switch is lit, which it should be if and only if you pressed it, when the tractor calls for a regen, you should see the yellow smoke puff looking light in the upper right corner of the dash.
If RPM needs to be increased, the n/min light with the thing that looks like a M67 hand grenade with an arrow pointing up will be flashing. Increase RPM until it stops flashing. You can stop or keep working, but you must maintain that RPM until the puff of smoke light goes out.
You may have noticed, at no point in that process are any buttons pushed. I have the same two DPF buttons on mine that are shown in the page out of the L3302 OM above. I’ve never touched either of them.
I have had a couple times when I was concentrating so much on what I was doing I didn’t notice the lights on the dash, but did notice a slight change in engine exhaust tone, which caused me to look at the dash and then see the light. But if you’re seeing the three lights, don’t know why you’d miss two lights.
To directly answer your question about auto regen occurring without you knowing about it in some circumstances, I have had that happen when running my chipper at 540 PTO RPM. Went to shut it down to take a break and noticed the puff of smoke light on, but the M67 grenade light wasn’t. It finished the regen by itself about 2 minutes later, so it had been running regen for probably at least 10 minutes.
If it doesn’t work as described in the OM, I’d say there’s an issue. I don’t have a L3302 and I’m not a tech, so take that for what it’s worth.
