Dealer says low compression in one cylinder. Suggests timing belt slipped a cog. Just bought this unit and have no history on it. Ran it for a short time and it would not start after that. Dealer changed gas, new filters, spark plugs and the common maintenance things. Not sure that I trust the dealer and want to check it out myself. I am a confident mechanic, but have no history on working on a Kubota. This is my first post and just would like some opinions on how to proceed.

If it is 30 & 100, no wonder it won’t start. Being you are a mechanic, why not double check those numbers with your own gauge?

Both of those values are pretty low. Here is the spec sheet from the workshop manual and factory spec is 185.

If you want a project, you might have it.... Might be worth checking on the valves to see if there is something that's an easy fix.

Getting to the timing belt looks to involve pulling the engine out.

I will when I get it back from the shop. I detect a little bit of sarcasm in your reply. What I was really after is how likely was it for the timing belt to slip cogs and if that is a common problem with the RTV. I see from the forum, that starting problems with the RTV are fairly common and has a variety of causes. I was hoping that the forum could reply in such a manner that would lead me to a possible cause. Being this was my first post, I expected a more helpful reply than what you provided. You have not been helpful. Probably will not use this forum again. Bill

Thank you for this advise and information. We won't really know the problem is until the engine is torn down, I hope the problem is something like the valves, which would be easier to deal with. However, since I have no history on this RTV, the timing belt has to be in play. Thanks again for a helpful reply. Bill

You are welcome Bill.

These smaller RTVs seem to work great until they don't. I think the earlier ones used a Subaru Robin engine, and seem to not have a ton of easy to find information about troubleshooting.

Seeing if you have some valve damage as the cause of your low compression might make it an easy fix, but yeah, it may be a larger effort.

If you need other pages out of the manual, I can send some a long for you once you get there.
