LANSING (WJRT) (6/25/2020) - As employers around the U.S. implant microchips in workers to track productivity, the Michigan House passed a bill making them voluntary in the state.

The bill passed Wednesday prohibits employers from requiring workers to accept a microchip implant.

“With the way technology has increased over the years and as it continues to grow, it’s important Michigan job providers balance the interests of the company with their employees’ expectations of privacy,” said State Rep. Bronna Kahle of Lenawee County, who sponsored the bill.

She said companies increasingly are turning to miniature microchips about the size of a rice grain implanted in employees' hands to track productivity so managers can look for ways to boost efficiency.

In some places, the RFID microchips take the place of time cards, ID badges and security clearance devices. Some can be equipped with credit card technology to complete financial transactions.

Kahle said the devices aren't used widely yet, but she believes they could become a standard business practice around Michigan in the next few years.

"While these miniature devices are on the rise, so are the calls of workers to have their privacy protected," Kahle said.

Companies could still deploy implanted microchips under her bill, but the policy would have to be voluntary rather than mandatory. Indiana recently passed similar legislation for implanted microchips.

Kahle's bill now heads to the State Senate for consideration. It would have to pass there before Gov. Gretchen Whitmer could sign it into law.

The scary side of technology. Seems more like a mark of the beast than an efficiency tool. JMHO.

These companies probably have 20 or more "managers" sitting around staring at computers to try and figure out how to make the 10 employees on the production line "more productive".
Why not just ask the production employees? Its called LEAN, Six Sigma and Theory of Constraints!

Why? Because 17 of those 20 managers probably wouldn't be needed! Its called Unnecessary Fixed Cost Reduction!
If they're like most companies, there's multiple 'overhead' employees for every 1 operator on the line.

I watched a documentary on a Chinese tractor company. In it they showed the use of facial recognition cameras in the facility. No one punches a time clock. When arriving you look up at the camera as you walk in. When you go to lunch and return, same thing, and look up as you leave for the day. You can bet there's not much shooting the breeze around the plant. That's no way to live and work.

And...
When I worked for Coca-Cola they were federally required to install cameras in the plant for food safety. It's funny how that ended up working out. Never had a food safety issue. But you would be surprised how many employee disciplinary issues arose. (Even though they claimed that's not what they were used for. ;) )

At least the bill prohibited making it mandatory. Can't imagine too many people volunteering for it.

The place I worked at had video surveillance in the shop and after a while you forget about it. Never gave it a thought because I didn't abuse my time there. Theft of time is a serious offense, will get you terminated.
