I looked at the hay spears that you can buy to fit on a loader bucket but didn't like the design because it put the spear at the bottom of the bucket and you couldn't see the spear. So I built my own. patterned after a spear I have for a 3pt hitch. Angle on bottom fits over bucket cutting edge and flat top plate sticks over top of bucket. chain goes from two bottom eyes to top eye around back of bucket and is tightened with a ratcheting chain binder. Just finshed painting it tonight, will post more pics when I get it mounted on tractor.

Looks sturdy enough. I just weld a socket to the top of an old manure bucket, and that way the spikes on the manure bucket keeps the bale from swinging around, as I move them... Old manure buckets is cheap, around here, at auction...:D:D

If your tractor "grunts" at the load of the bales you're moving you can increase the leverage by modifying your fabricated bale spear to mount directly to the loader arms.

Makes a big difference in leverage required. Kinda like bringing in a bag of groceries at arms length, vs. carrying it next to your chest.

Thought about for my next project making pallet forks and converting everything to quick attach to get it hooked directly to arms. Also could see better without bucket blocking view.

I recently moved some bales with a spear mounted to the bucket. Previously some years back I used a spear that mounted directly to the loader arms.

I was surprised how much more leverage that bale had hanging an extra 18-24 inches further out.

mikes1165, looks nice.

Is there a way to attach the hook on the load binder to the hole you made in your bale stinger? I think the piece you have the hook attached to is way too light duty. You may end up dropping a bale of hay somewhere you don't expect!

I could probably come up with a different way. it is fastened with a 5/16 quick link. It has a working load limit of 1760# and a breaking strength of 5280#. What would you suggest. Hook on binder won't fit on loop (loop is to thick 3/8).
I unloaded 24 round bales from a trailer and stacked them in the hay barn today and it works great. No problem handling the bales. Now to add some lights.
