I picked up a Scat Trak 1300HD with a V1902 that smokes bad & has no power. The previous owner had the head gone through - new valves, springs, seats..

Compression test
#1 = 390psi, 500psi w/40wt
#2 = 320psi, 400psi w/40wt
#3 = 290psi, 390psi w/40wt
#4 = 320psi, 400psi w/40wt

I talks to the guy that rebuild the head and there are no cross hash marks anymore. He was not paid to measure the bore so he did not.

Should I pull the engine, hone & re-ring or just replace with a good used v2203 from e-bay $1500?

From a purely economic and time standpoint that used motor sounds real good, for that price, but I'd want to hear it run...:D

I'm not really sure that a V2203 will be a direct replacement for a V1902?
It possible that you might need to rework the bell housing , flywheel, motor mounts and maybe radiator to make it fit.;)

There is a guy on ebay that will take your old motor replace it with a 2203 for around 1500$ plus shipping. You first must send him your motor so he can mod to all of the things N. I. Wolfman was talking about.

When I get my 743 sealed up on the transmission/hydraulic end I'm pulling my 1702 and upgrading.

I will be the devils advocate here. I had a VW rabbit with 180k miles on it. I bought new rings and bearings, both crank and rod, cut the rim out of the block to remove the pistons, honed it with a simple Craftsman 3 hone and re-assembled. Man that thing ran like a crazy horse, didn't use any oil and I sold it 110K later. I did have the head gone through when it was apart and a friend had the tools to to re-time the injection.

My point is that if you have the skills to re-ring and put new in new bearings I think you would be surprised how long this thing can last.

I simply wanted to upgrade an alternator on one of my machines and that took more work and fabrication than it was worth. I wouldn't want to think of something as major as a engine upgrade. These machines are not like replacing a small block chevy with a bigger small block chevy.

My .02, no offense to anyone here.

Happy trails my friend.
