Just a quick update. I got the valve out. leaving it soaking with WD40 managed to free it. Once free it quickly worked fully free and then just pulled out relatively easily. There was no snap ring as shown in the manual, or groove for a snap ring to locate into either so presumably not missing...

Yes that's correct. The split pin acts as as indication of the valve position and travels between two split pins that mark end of travel each way that are positioned upright from the block casting.
