The engine was not overheated. The temp gauge was normal. I had recently flushed the radiator and replaced the antifreeze. It just sounded like the rear PTO was engaged, but I took the plastic cover off and it was not moving. When I started it later, the noise was not there.

That's what I thought until I stopped and disengaged the PTO and shifted to neutral. The noise was still there. I wonder if the transmission just got hot?
