    Thanks for the replys. I'm still not clear if the seal is there to keep a small amount of grease in or dirt out. Maybe both. The new bushing,listed as a dry bushing, had a plastic or nylon liner in it. Hope I'm not replacing it again after a few hours.

    I think you are talking about the throw out bearing. The pilot bushing is in the end of the crankshaft and it supports the front of the drive shaft.

    I am putting a new pilot bushing and drive shaft in my tractor. There is a seal that installs after the dry bushing is in place. Since it is sealed, it seems like I should put some grease in there. Has anyone tried grease ? Thanks, Dan
