    So, folks, is the only solution at this point to split it open and replace the clutch plate and throw out in the process? I tried backing the tractor into a tree with the clutch engaged, but no help for the tractor or the tree.

    No, pressing the clutch in has no effect when the tractor is in gear. Sorry, I should have mentioned that earlier.
