Yes, Nathan has quite a following with his videos. He started videoing so that he would have a few for his Son to watch and it went from there. He has a much better setup now that he has moved and he is also a very nice guy.

My bf sawing rate is the same regardless of the species. I normally use two blades per day, again regardless of the species, which are resharpened/set by a Wood-Mizer Service Center @$11.70 per blade which includes shipping both ways. I also use ~4 gallons of Diesel each day.

    Covid Stuff - Unrelated

It is very easy to judge last year's or even last month's decisions based on today's knowledge. Monday morning quarterbacks are always 100% correct.

Yes, Red Oak. I won't have the cut list until we begin sawing, weather permitting, Monday. Those two closest logs are 36" so each of them will take 3-4 hours to saw but each of them should yield ~500+bf of lumber. That's the good stuff. ;)

    Health and Safety

I am doing the prescribed lifting and pulling exercises three times per day and it's working because I am now within 2" of raising the repaired arm as high as the other. Small gains, but I am well pleased. I seldom even think about the total knee replacement that was done in November. ;)

My intent was to be neither defensive nor argumentative. As a matter of fact I said the "I have no need to debate the value of my sawing services". I did try to answer the various questions and remarks for those that are interested. Sawmilling and especially portable sawmilling is a very...

Nice find johnjk. Property line marking is a very important Wintertime job. I freshen mine every couple of years making it a family fun activity with the Son and Grandsons. Some of them would tell that I tripped and fell down a hillside with a bucket of paint, but without pictures.....it...

    Sawmilling

I have no need to debate the value of my sawing services. I am in my 18th year of sawing and probably half of my customers each year are "repeat customers". The above customer was a repeat. I saw whatever dimension lumber that the customer ask for. I sticker stack the lumber as seen above...

    Daily Chuckle

Been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking, "Surely I can't look that old?" Well, you'll love this one: "My name is Alice, and I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist. I noticed his DDS diploma on the wall, which bore his full name...

Rather than to just make a statement, I went back and pulled some actual prices from Lowes and compared them to my sawing cost. These dimensions are what the majority of the lumber consisted of: 2"X6"X12' Lowes = $6.56 My sawing = $3.60 2"X6"X16' Lowes = $8.65 My sawing = $4.80...

You need to recheck your figures because my sawing price is from 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of Lowes "store bought". (I checked too.) ;) In the above instance, those logs were all culls that the commercial sawmill would not accept. Rather than let them rot or termites eat them, he had them sawn into...

I mill for a "per board foot" rate with a one thousand board feet minimum. The above job was 3577bf. Board Foot Calculator Using this calculator you will find that an 8' 2X4 = 5.33bf. Sawing rates generally range from .25 to .50 per board foot and my rate is somewhere between. Also if...

Yes...sorta, but 'smaller' and 'PTO' really don't match. PTO driven sawmills are usually circle mills which have their own mechanical operations, non of which are small. If the PTO is used to power a bandsaw which would require the sawhead to remain stationary, then you are faced with moving...

What did you do to or on your Kubota today?

Not my M4900, but my customer's M4700 with a grapple moving a few logs. Not much difference.

This is an example of what my Grandson I produced in 3 days with my sawmill. The first picture is of the logs before we began sawing and the second is of the finished product which consisted of 2X4's, 2X6's, & 2X10's.

Business adapts to new way of life:Covid-19

Forest products and lumber manufacture is considered "essential" so I am still working and sawing. The first picture is of the logs, second is Grandson rolling a log, and third the finished product consisting of 2X4's, 2X6's, & 2X10's totaling 3577 board feet. Yes, that stack of lumber came...

    COVID-19 Stuff

I apologize. I was just making a comparison to the 3,000 number that had been posted above mine. I agree, this COVID-19 compares to nothing that we have ever experienced. Our Governor has ordered our state shut down as of 5:00PM Friday for any incidental travel other than gas, pharmacy, &...
