When starting the tractor I move the lever to the neutral position and it pops into place although not aligned with the marking on the housing. i believe the neutral safety pawl holds it in position.

No just the high range

it will only start in neutral as by design. The neutral lever position is forward ( towards the turtle). I.e. not aligned with the neutral marking on the housing.

I purchased the tractor 6 months ago. I use it mostly on flat-level ground and it's fine. It only occurs if I drive on a slope. The problem has probably been there since I got the tractor and I never noticed it I've checked all the linkages and all are fine. Nothing bent or out of place...

Bx2230d. I start the tractor with the hi/low range lever in the neutral position. It will move while in the neutral position. (it's in gear without moving the range selection lever out of the neutral position) If I fail to put it in low or high range and head down a slope it'll pop out of...
