Wouldn't it be easier to get rid of the tax on the regular diesel?
This would have been a more appropriate solution. As North Idaho Wolfman stated the red dye is there for a purpose and not easy/possible to overcome. I would imagine states who do not permit use of red fuel on highways will be more adamant about checking tanks at various stops.

Will the folks that spot check by dipping tanks be in the unemployment line?
In 34 years of driving OTR, I've never had anyone dip my tanks ... And now it would be quite challenging to so on many trucks ...

This is my current truck a 2026 Kenworth T680, not only is the tank fill under the sleeper, but it has an anti-siphon strainer basket in the filler neck!

But ... All they really gotta do is look at one of the filters ... There are two additional regular spin on filters too ...

Illinois Governor made it legal to use red dye fuel for ag purposes.

Using red-dye diesel for on-road purposes and deferring the tax became legal in Illinois on Oct. 6, when Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed Executive Order 2026-08, specifically for agricultural use.

Reading the article, it brings up the concerns that has been discussed about in this forum such as what happens when you cross state-lines, what happens on January 1st when you have dyed fuel left in the tank, if you show that you pay the taxes on the fuel after the 1st, does that protect you from any fines?

it is kubuki theatrics nothing more. typical politician pretending to care so you continue to vote... if the government cared they would drop all fuel taxes and start building refineries, drilling for oil, and stop exporting until domestic prices go back to normal

Kinda different ... As it's not red diesel, but ... A few years ago Illinois halted the state sales tax on diesel (on road) and I believe gasoline too ...

In Missouri we got a waiver for agriculture use to use the red diesel on the road, as long as it was for agriculture use, plus they raised the weight limits for same type of farm to market use ... Good to the end of the month ...
