Good Afternoon,
I have a L1720 Loader on L355-SS tractor. Looking to replace filter and fluids. It has an external reservoir and pump runs off front of tractor. Does anyone know what the capacity of the system is with separate reservoir, and what fluid to use? I'm going to assume Super UDT-2 fluid even though its its own system.
Thanks in advance

Takes roughly 7.25 gallons of AW-46 hydraulic oil. Fill to 1" shows on dip stick.

Oh goodness not SUDT2
Use simple cheap hydraulic fluid for that setup.

I couldn't tell if that meant the hydraulic system on the tractor or not. It wasn't clear to me. Because apparenty some of the L1720 loaders did not have a separate reservoir and system.
So with the separater reservoir it still takes 7.5 gallons?

Good to know, I'll get a pail at tractor supply for $50 vs $140 at Kubota. I figured it did not need to be SUDT-2..
However that is what I am going to put in the Trans since the L355 has the shuttle shift

UDT for that trans is perfectly fine. ;)

SUDT2 is overkill in that tractor. Any quality Universal Tractor Fluid (UTF) is perfectly adequate. Unless you just like spending money TSC Traveller Premiun UTF will be right next to their AW hydraulic oil.

@TheOldHokie Good to know. No not trying to spend money un-necessarily, but also want to keep the old girl alive for a while. Picking it up Tuesday so just want to get prepared to service it once I get it.
Cosmetically the tractor was rough (particularly the hood all stoved up), but tractor ran good, shifted good etc. Using for firewood mostly on the property. Little Economy Power King 1614 was struggling to move short pieces of oak and it was taking me longer to cut wood, this should cut my time in 1/4 with the L355-SS.

The shuttle shift is the only system I worry about in the driveline and didn't know if it was better just to buy Kubota SUDT2

Any reason to not just use the UTF in both loader and trans?

The Owners Manual calls for a universal tractor transmission oil and lists Shell Donax, Mobilfluid 423, and Exxon Torquefluid 56. No mention of any Kubota branded fluid let alone SUDT2.

In your situation many people opt to simplify things and use UTF in both loader and tractor. Thats perfectly fine.

BTW - the KV40 viscosity of a UTF falls dead in the middle of the AW46 and AW68 ranges. Its just over the upper limit for AW46 (50.4 cSt) and just below the lower limit for AW68 (61.2 cSt).

But conventional hydraulic oil is a monograde formulation with a viscosity index around 105. UTF is a muktigrade formulation with a viscosity index around 135. The UTF is going to be a better choice for all season use.

Thanks Dan,

In Maine I will probably use the UTF in the loader. Still thinking ill just bite the $300 bullet for 2x5 gallon pails and do SUDT2. Might be overkill but the only things I can control on a machine is how I operate it and how I maintain it. Being older I'll spend a little more if the fluid will help keep it running longer/smoother.

If there was zero advantage to the Kubota SUDT2 for the shuttle shift then I probably would just put Generic fluid in it, but I am worried about the 3 point and shuttle shift with generic fluids.

HAHA I just know sometimes the hydraulic systems can be sensitive to fluids. More whining or slower movement with generic.
Again, I have no problem saving $100/5 gallons if the Tractor supply UDT will work fine in both loader and transmission.
If anyone does this on older iron and has no issues then I will absolutely save the money.

Your tractor predates "standard" UDT which is just an OEM branded UTF (e.g. John Deere J20C). Thats why its not mentioned in the OM. SUDT didnt come along until 20+ years later and SUDT2 was even later.

Do whatever makes you feel good but your tractor has designed for and has lived on other oils for many years.

This subject reminds me of the circa ‘87 Ferguson Compactor Roller I own. It has a Hydrostatic drive, and blew most of it’s fluid over-board thru a failed 1-inch hose.

I had NAPA build a replacement hose….and while there bought 10-gallons of fluid.

Napa had a Huge Stack of 5-gal buckets of a “discount” brand of fluid… “VP-Racing”…. on sale for $20 per bucket… And when I picked up a pail the salesguy said “That’s cheap stuff! I wouldn’t put that in anything modern!”

I pointed out that the machine originally called for a Mobil product …and he insisted I install a Genuine NAPA bucket of AW46…for $60.. So, against his warning, I bought one of each.

When I opened them up and poured them into the machine…. Looking into the bottom of each bucket…... I noticed something:

The $20 VP-Racing pail was spotlessly-clean.

The $60 Napa pail had a ring of black sitting on the bottom that looked worse than a ring from a feed-lot-boy’s bathtub.

(That was 7 years ago and that compactor-roller has been working just fine ever-since.)

I see these days that the VP-Racing hyd-oil is priced the same as the TSC UDT. I guess Folks have figured out that it’s just fine for most purposes.

Ugly…but compacts my turf runway so that it keeps the hogs off it. (Ex State of Tx TDOT highway dept. 14K lbs, John-Deere 4239 diesel)

around here we would just measure what comes out and replace it according to that with required adjustments +/- .
Measuring pails about C$9 or U$5.50 each so they are cheap and last really long time.

@MapleLeafFarmer That is what I plan on doing, just figured I would get a rough idea so I know how much fluid to get before draining it, then drain and verify.
good idea. what sucks for me is its a 2 1/2 hour drive rnd trip from 'stead to the nearest service town so I probably keep well more "stuff" like pails of oil and common hose sizes on my shelves than i need which costs $ but saves time and fuel. Blow a hose and have better part of day down is expensive these days.

good luck!
