I bought a used L3800 about a year ago. The 3 pt hitch lowers and raises fine, but the lowing speed knob was frozen. I finally worked up the courage to work on it today. With a little nudge from some channel locks and lots of pb blaster, it now moves freely by hand. However, it is turning multiple times around left and right. I don't want to rotate too far and cause an issue, but i went at least 3 rotations left and back to the right. I was raising and lowering the rear PTO with my 5 ft brush hog attached and didn't really notice much difference in the speed and I never hit a point where it locked and didn't move. My question- I was expecting the knob to rotate about 270-360 degrees to hit the "fast", "slow", and "lock" described in the manual and stop both left and right. Is this normal ? I don't want to turn so many times that I unscrew it. Before you ask, the shaft is spinning, the knob is not stripped.

It should turn mutiple times, but it does stop at some point.

Save a ton of guess work and remove the assembly (simple remove 2 bolts), completely disassemble, clean and inspect.

Wolfman-
Thank you. That makes me feel much better. I'll pull it apart in the next few weeks and service.

Every time i get on my tractor, i always reach down and turn mine a few times just to keep it from seizing. I`ve had mine apart a few times, cleaned, lubed, it still turns hard after the tractor sits for a short time. Its just a really shiddy design and engineering flaw.

Next time you pull it apart, use anti seize on it. ;)

It's like a water hydrant on your house. Turn it in clockwise all the way to close the flow. Turn it counterclockwise to open up the flow. The more you open it up, the faster the 3-point will drop.
