Hey guys,

So I could use a little bit of advice. We are looking to get a Kubota tractor and there's one this coming up Saturday at 9 am at auction. Its the 7040d 4x4 with cab and 2k hrs. We have 8 acres in southern oregon, in looking for this tractor for maintaining the road and earth moving, brush hog etc, Nothing crazy. We had a guy come out with his mx5800 or 5400 and it did amazing adding and removing land where we needed. So we're looking to for least that size or bigger, slightly. But the m x kubota are kind of expensive, even used. If I go within 400 miles, even through california, the best I see is 28k to 32k+ for one. I think I want a tractor for now and not so much as skidsteer.
So the 7040D has a pre auction video and everything seems to work and function ok. So what would be a good price on it? Google says 12k to 30k+ so i'm not sure what a good used One should go for. Im hoping to get it for 15k or less. They have one in Medford its a m8200 with backhoe for 18k but has 3500 hrs. Video that shows it running very well and all the movements Strong and crisp. But it's a lot bigger of a machine. It kind of outweighs my trailer ( I have a 10k trailer ) and I am not necessarily needing the backhoe and 3500 hrs kind of scares me. I'm mechanically, inclined, but i've never owned a kubota, used one for a few years on a job when i was 20 but i'm not looking to bite off more than I can chew either.
So basically my question is, for this used 7040D what would be a good auction price for southern Oregon? And is 3500 hrs a lot for a 2000 m8200
Any advisor help would be great. Thank you !!!

An almost 70hp tractor with a cab, 4WD, 2,000 hours and I assume a loader for $15k? When you think that an M6060HDC (nearest comparable model) with zero hours will cost you around $60k not to mention insurance if you finance it, I think that $20k would be a good price if the tractor has been reasonably well looked after and everything works as it should. I could see such a tractor being put up for sale for $5k to $10k over that so $15k might be a steal and would provide you with some cushion if there are some issues with the tractor. Everything carries risk and this would be no exception, but think about what it might cost to repair some of the more major components and decide if you can live with the risk.

Ideally you'd be able to inspect it before bidding since many have been burned buying sight unseen.

I'm not sure what the -D means. Be aware that these came with hydraulic shuttle and synchro shuttle transmissions. The hydraulic would be more desirable, but either would probably meet your needs.

I'll be surprised if you get a good one with 2000 hours for $15k, but good luck.

Saying M7040D is just saying it's a 4wd and it's not pointing out the actual model.
Hey guys, So I could use a little bit of advice.
Saying M7040D is just saying it's a 4wd and it's not pointing out the actual version.
There are 14 different versions of the M7040

Each has it's own differences.
Their is a huge difference between a M7040SUD and a M7040HDC-LTD
One would sell for the low dollar and one would sell for top dollar.

The M7040's are very sought after because they are a non / minimal emission tractor.
So they almost always sell at a premium.
You are in thee PNW and that in itself make for a premium price, take a typical central, southern, eastern sale price and double it.
I'll bet that tractor goes for at least 25K and very possibly way more.

The M8200 has far fewer versions of 4wd, 3
They are a much older tractor than the M7040.
The M8200 is a good solid tractor, but being older parts are getting harder and more expensive and they were made in far less quantities so parts are harder to find.
Having a BH on a tractor that big can also lead to Big damage if it was not installed and run properly.

Ok gotcha. Thanks for the info. Wow the 6060 new is expensive 😳

Thank you everyone for all your input and info. Wow, I didn't realize that the new 6060 was that expensive geez. I'll look on that tractor website and see what they're going for used in the conditions And whatnot. Yeah i'm definitely leaning more towards this 7040. I did notice in a few of the pictures that the rear hydraulic attachments are really greasy and the tractor is definitely been used as an outdoor tree farm rig. Has some bumps and bruises, but everything seems to function and look ok on a working aspect anyways. It ends Saturday morning, so we will see what it gets up to. Wife said i can go a little higher so time will tell. Thank you again everybody for the input. Has helped a ton and informed us.

Based on the auction and photos it looks to be an M7040HDC i.e. cab with hydraulic shuttle but the plate on the tractor just shows M7040D. It certainly looks rough but would look a whole lot better with a good clean.

@392 Goat, good luck with the auction. (y) After watching the video and seeing that the doors are included but not shown, I think you'd be getting a really good deal if you could snag it at $15K, even with the 5% buyer's premium.

You never know if problems exist or are lurking, but if that tractor has spent its life doing relatively light work in a nursery, and has been maintained then you have a decent chance of getting a really good tractor. It would look all kinds of awesome with some TLC. Personally, if I were in the market for that size and model I'd want to be under $20k with the thought to spend $500 on a complete service (for parts including hydraulic oil). I'd also be thinking about a budget to address any future issues, not for labor since I do all my own work, but for parts at least. I'd probably tell myself that I expect to put $5k into the tractor over the next five years, but would hope that nothing other than standard maintenance is needed.

I think it's better to hope for the best but plan for the worst.

Not sure if we'll hear from the OP again but the M7040D sold for $20,075.00. With the 5% buyer's fee that comes to $21,078.75.

You never know. 2,000 hours on the machine and perhaps light use at a nursery, but from the overall look of the tractor I'd be a little concerned about their maintenance program. But looks can be deceiving.
