I looked at an RTV-X Crew cart today. MSRP before tax is $28,643.46. They offered it for $25,326.86. That's a cash deal, no trade, out the door.

That is 13% off MSRP, before any haggling. Opinions?

I don't know what they paid for it, unfortunately.

Well, now. I have been going over Kubota's site, and the dealer--big shock here--was not totally candid about MSRP. It turns out the numbers they cited in the pre-discount price were inflated, so the total discount is $1036.57, or 4%. Not great.

Are you sure there aren't some options or other elements that you've missed on the Kubota website? I find it unusual for dealers to be completely dishonest, what they're saying may be true if you squint at it in a particular way. For example, delivery fees or the like may be additional to Kubota MSRP.

I have been, and know, TONS of people, that work at various dealerships here in the Metro Detroit, and no one, (not one person) KNOWS FOR SURE the actual dealer cost(s)...

That has been an "Enigma wrapped in a riddle” since the dawn of time.

There are so many things to consider like # of units being sold, discounts for X and Y, and special promotions, end of the month incentives …blah…blah…blah….

They do it on purpose too…..

The only “constant” I believe to be true, is that they “don’t lose money” when they sell one….NO MATTER WHAT THEY “CLAIM”!!!!

hahahah….good luck sir (y) (y)

They didn't actually lie. The quote didn't say "MSRP" anywhere. It said "unit price." But they were trying to fool me; no doubt about that. The quote didn't list any fees.

I ordered a couple of parts while I was there: $39. From Messick's: $29.05. I used to feel like a spendthrift because I ordered stuff online instead of driving to the dealership, but now that I see the price difference, I realize I save money by having things shipped. It would cost $44 to get the parts from Messick's, but I would save $5-$6 on gas, and I would never have to leave the house.

Well, I bought a cart. I did my best to figure out what MSRP really was and offered 10% off. They took it right away, so now I assume I blew it. But I did a lot better than their nutty original quotations.

I used to be the guy who sat in the dealership for hours and tormented salespeople to squeeze out the last dollar, but these days, I don't feel like I have to have the best deal in the universe. God has been generous to me, so if other people make a little money off of me, fine. I just don't want to be the guy who goes in and jumps at the first fake discount they offer.

I have some helpful info for other people, because it appears to be impossible to figure out what dealers pay, and even calculating MSRP is an art.

First, don't even consider buying the premium trim if you have a choice. All you really get are overpriced, fragile aluminum wheels which you don't want. Premium comes with a sprayed bed, which you want, plus the fancy wheels and some body color options. Some dealers will order standard jobs with steel wheels and sprayed beds, so that's what you want.

Second, you want the straight shift, and in my case, the dealer already had it installed on his standard carts.

Third, the rest of the junk the site mentions can be installed later at home, so there is no point in buying it up front because you're afraid you'll get a cart that lacks important features.

Doesn't mean you blew it. Sometimes, like you, they don't want to screw around. If it's a fair offer they take it.

My dealer (in rural NZ, where things are a bit different) just gave me the Kubota price list to them, and told me the deal he'd do, said they don't negotiate. His deal was fair (better than I could get elsewhere), and it's convenient for me to not have to negotiate and worry. He's looked after me well. And I got a hat, which is always important.

FYI, you did alright. the gap between dealer cost and MSRP is lowest on utility vehicles. Dealers can't show the large discounts like is possible on other equipment.

Well, I didn't pay $25K. At least I can say that. They snapped up $23.4K, which made me think I had made them a bit too happy.

Many, many, many years ago I was a cars salesman during hard times in-between engineering jobs. They put us through sales training where we learned the philosophy of sales negotiation.

When a buyer offers to pay X and the seller accepts immediately without blinking the buyer almost always think they over paid and could have got a better deal. Even if it is actually the best deal.

If the seller hems and haws (I just couldn't do a deal for that low amount) and comes back with a counter offer, even a 1% increase, the buyer always feels they negotiated well and goes away happy.

People are a strange species.

When you buy a Honda or a Chevy, you know whether you did all right, because you know what other people paid, and you know what the dealer paid. With Kubota, you have to guess!

I'm completely happy with the cart.
