Last year I got an LX2620 with a QH16 quick hitch. I used my GS0560 grading scraper with no trouble. Now I am trying to figure out how to properly connect my RCR1272 rotary cutter to the QH16 using the 320-013A floating top link kit for the QH16. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong.

The RCR1272's hitch setup looks nothing like the ones in the floating top link kit manual. If I install the kit to the QH16, when I line it up to the cutter, the hook engages, and the clevis pin provided in the kit is not long enough to insert through the shields and floating bars and still be able to insert the cotter pin to hold it in place. Even if was long enough, with the hook engaged, the bars couldn't possibly do anything.

If I look through the RCR1272's parts manual, the "old style" hitch for serial numbers below 953490 looks like would work fine with the floating top link kit. The "new style" hitch for 953491 and above matches what I have, though, and doesn't.

I can connect the RCR1272 directly to the QH16 without the floating top link kit, no problem. The hook on the QH16 latches right on to the rotary cutter's cast floating top link. What am I missing? Does the newer RCR1272 just not need the QH16 floating top link kit? Should I remove the top hook, and just get a longer clevis pin so that I can attach the floating bars? The area I will be cutting is not level, it has some slope to it, so I do need it to float some.

I notice the floating top link kit manual says I should have a 3/4"-3-3/4" clevis pin but it actually has 4" of usable length between the head and cotter pin so that's possibly a hint to just go bigger. Any ideas?

Don’t most modern cutters already have a floating top link?

My cutter definitely has a floating top link. But I keep reading that the quick hitch hook is too rigid to work properly with the cutter floating top link, for example -
For implements featuring a floating top link, an optional top link becomes essential, ensuring its secure attachment during traverses over ditches and similar obstacles.
from the QH16 section at the bottom of Messicks page.

Maybe I'm just overthinking it and the cutter's floating top link is enough. That's what I'm hoping to learn here. If I didn't have the quick hitch on, the tractor's top link would float freely, unlike the rigid hook on the quick hitch.

I have never used a quick hitch, but the floating top link on my land pride cutter has always been all that I need.

I have an RCR1860 and a QH 10. I just connect by hooking the black pin of the built-in floating assembly. I have 5+ years using the set up on hilly/rolling ground complete with terraces. You do not need the floating plates. I have the floating plates, and I do need them for my finish mower.

Thank you both. It sounds like my two best options are to hook the QH16 directly to the black pin on the cutter's floating assembly, or remove the quick hitch and connect the cutter directly to the lift arms and center link. This makes a lot of sense. Thanks again.

The 320-013a floating top link kit is not necessary when using your cutter. It was designed for the cutters below s.n. 953490.

It wasn't obvious to me either. Find a picture of the same cutter hooked up to a QH. It will work.
