Today I was grappling logs out of a recent timber selective harvest on my farm. Somehow or another I got a small log or big stick hung up in my fuel line and I unhosed itself. My tractor quit and I couldn’t figure out why until I smelled the diesel fuel. I got out and found fuel running out onto the ground. I found the disconnected hose and reattached it.
Upon trying to start it back up I realized I had ran it dry. I looked at the clear filter and seen it was still full. So I went to the fuel filter and opened the bleeder and pumped the primer. Lots of air came out but after doing this several times over the next couple hours it still won’t start. I called the dealership and spoke to the service manager. I asked him if there was some kind of relay switch or something that kicks off under this condition and he said no.
After a few hours of checking fuses and redoing the fuel line purge I called it quits and went in the house.
This tractor has 8 hours on it.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

FWIW, the owner's manual should have the 'purging proceedure' somewhere ( maybe in 'fuel filter changing ' section ? Not all tractors have the same proceedure. One diesel had TWO 'purge' valves and you had to do the one closest to the tank first THEN the one nearest the engine.

One thing is maybe put a charger on the battery for a few hours ? If might be low enough to not open the stop solenoid or fully close a relay ?

Hopefully someone who has an MX4900 or similar tractor will reply soon.

I'm really baffled what your calling the primer as there isn't one?????
Why don't you give us a picture of what your calling the primer.

How you bleed this system is you open the bleeder and turn the key on for a bit that will purge all the air out of the system.

This is an electronic fuel injection system NO stop solenoid.

If you have KTAC, this would be a good time to drop a dime.

The main ECU controls fuel injection. Here's a nice schematic in the WSM showing the fuel system in the MX5400/MX6000 and I would assume it's the same for the MX4900 which has the same engine.

yessh...fuel go round and round and round and......
looks like when you kill power to that SCV + injectors , engine stops going round and round.

thanks.
great.... now I'm curiouser... why the fuel cooler (5) is it because the fuel gets too hot, going round and round and round..... ?

I'd say you have to run the fuel pump (6) for ages (key on?) to get the bubbles out in the first part and then you have to crank (cam 16) so that the high pressure pump (8) can get the rest of the bubbles out before Diesel reaches the injectors.

I think the work shop manual is your friend here how to go about getting this engine started again.

Edit: removed bad advice

Possibly opening the injector pipes (careful, this could be bad advice with common rail Diesel engines; never had one of them).

I think it says 3 min in most manuals???

Sorry but yes bad advice, DO NOT open any part of the fuel system after the fuel filter on a common rail system.
Doing so could cause serious harm to someone and / or kill them!

Key on, no cranking
I could very well be wrong on length of time... I will look it up. ;)

Correction:
Fuel bleed time is 1 min with key on, bleeder open no cranking.

But the high pressure lines still have to fill after that through cranking, or maybe not? Maybe not much air gets in as soon as the pressure drops.

The pressures the common rails use, can push the air out of the injectors/lines.

Here's the "how to purge air from the fuel" section in the MX5400/MX6000 operator's manual.

Just when I think I've got it figured out, Kubota up and changes it again.

So throw out everything I said previously as it was all :poop:!

Follow what @McMXi put up.

Thanks To @McMXi and @whitetiger for setting me straight! ;)
